Our story

From Scotland to the world

Founded in 2013

Founded in 2013 in Scotland, Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) manufactures world-leading vertical farming technology. The company set out to address challenges faced by growers across the world (such as extreme weather, labour shortages, and the impact of pests and disease) using a blend of science and engineering expertise.

Working with growers since 2017

In 2017, IGS made a covenant with the market never to grow crops for commercial sale, instead choosing to solely focus on developing world-class technology for growers. This approach is backed by continuous innovation and R&D, combining the latest science with actionable data.

IGS takes Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) one step further, in what is known as Total Controlled Environment Agriculture (TCEA). This makes for consistent, predictable crop yield, delivered via reputable growth recipes and a tailored, biosecure environment. TCEA allows for complete automation of the farm’s environment, minimising labour requirement, and in turn the risk of pests and diseases.

Deploying globally since 2018

IGS is currently deploying vertical farming technology across multiple continents, working closely with growers so they can produce consistently high-quality plants, regardless of what the weather outside looks like. This takes the form of close-knit partnerships, working with growers from the very first stages of planning, through to ongoing software development and ensuring they are armed with all the tools they need to succeed. IGS enables growers to produce plants sustainably, through scalable, modular technology that can flex to meet customer site requirements, from a smaller number of towers through to a high-output GigaFarm.

Continuously innovating

Since its inception, IGS has consistently manufactured best-in-class vertical farming technology, helping growers to increase yield and profit through sustainable plant production. IGS was awarded B Corp status in 2023, recognising the company’s high standards of environmental and social performance.

Where technology meets science

The IGS Crop Research Centre is based at the James Hutton Institute, a world-renowned crop and plant science research facility. IGS and the Hutton collaborate closely to help advance the understanding of plant science for indoor growing.

IGS' team of crop scientists works alongside our engineering and data teams, ensuring growth recipes are optimised through rigorous testing. These are backed by a raft of research and development and years of industry experience.
